Despite the wealth of data that has poured out of genomic science since the Human Genome Project, this data is only just beginning to change medical practice and save the lives and health of individual patients. A real medical revolution has been held up by many factors. Some of these factors are narrowly technological, such as the speed and cost of genome sequencing and the development and testing of safe and effective human gene therapies. Rescue Assist donates to SRF

Rescue Assist, Inc., a company developing a robotic product that readily maneuvers through debris and will help rescue workers find disaster survivors, has pledged 7% of its profits to SENS Research Foundation. Though the corporation was founded only a couple of years ago, it was profitable in 2012, and so has already begun to back SRF and its mission of transforming the way the world researches and treats the diseases of aging. “This is a great example of how entrepreneurs can support our work and our cause,” said Dr.

Dr. de Grey Debates at Oxford

Dr. Aubrey de Grey, SENS Research Foundation’s Chief Science Officer, debated Dr. Richard Faragher, Chair of the British Society for Research on Ageing and Professor of Biological Gerontology at the University of Brighton, at Oxford’s Sheldonian Theatre on February 19. Dr. de Grey argued that the diseases of aging can be treated comprehensively by SENS therapies, and that these therapies could be developed in the coming decades, given sufficient research and funding. Dr. Faragher disputed these points.

SRF hosts Los Angeles event

SENS Research Foundation celebrated its progress in 2012 with a party at Evidence Studios in Los Angeles on December 20. CEO Mike Kope delivered the evening’s first presentation, describing the organization's growth and maturation over the past year. Rice University’s Dr. Jacques Mathieu followed with an in-depth description of current LysoSENS research. Finally, CSO Dr. Aubrey de Grey gave an overview of each extramural project that SRF is funding, including research at Cambridge, Harvard, and Yale. The evening also featured a special video appearance by Edward James Olmos.

Dr. de Grey to speak at University of Delaware

The University of Delaware's Socratic Club will be hosting Dr. Aubrey de Grey on Tuesday, October 2. At 7:00pm, Dr. de Grey will deliver a talk entitled "Regenerative Medicine: A Realistic Prospect for Defeating Aging Altogether." You can read more about the event on the University of Delaware's website here. This will be a great opportunity for Delaware students and locals to get to hear from Dr. de Grey, and to ask him any questions they may have about SENS and regenerative medicine.

New Results from SENSF-Funded Research Published

This month, a paper reporting results from the LysoSENS project that SENS Foundation funds at Rice University will be published in the printed edition of Biotechnology and Bioengineering. (The paper is already available online.) The research that produced these results was primarily performed by Dr. Jacques Mathieu in the lab of Dr. Pedro Alvarez, in Rice University’s Department of Environmental Engineering.
